GESTOS is
considered one of the most important journals in its field. It is a
multi-lingual journal devoted to critical studies of Spanish, Latin American
and US-Latino Theater. It is published by the Department of Spanish and
Portuguese at the University of California, Irvine, CA. GESTOS is
associated with the Irvine Hispanic Theatre Research Group and co-sponsors
the annual conference on Hispanic theatre at the University of California.
The journal was founded
in 1986 with the objective of stimulating theoretical studies about theatre,
to integrate and establish dialogue among specialists of various
disciplines, to introduce unpublished dramatic texts and to provide material
for future histories of theatre. Another of its objectives is to promote a
larger integration between the theaters of Spain, Latin America, Portugal,
Brazil, and Latinos in the United States.
GESTOS strives
to integrate studies on theory of theater and performance by considering a
variety of theoretical approaches. The journal emphasizes the relationship
between theater and other visual and performance practices from the
perspective of cultural, theater, and visual studies. It also aspires to
contribute to the understanding of theater as performance and cultural
production.
Each issue is organized
into four main sections:
-
Essays: This seeks to promote the development of
dramatic and theatrical theories within the cultural spaces of the
journal. This section, usually in English, is valuable to any scholar
working on theory of drama or performance theory.
-
Texts: carries the text of unpublished plays written
by prominent dramatists from the Hispanic world.
-
History of theatre: includes performance reviews of
Hispanic documents as well as articles on developments in theatre
throughout the Hispanic world.
-
Book Reviews: commentary on books about theoretical
aspects of theater and books on Latin American, Spanish and U.S. Latino
theaters.
GESTOS also
relies on a network of international correspondents. It has published essays
and writings by well known international scholars from Argentina, Brazil,
Canada, Colombia, Chile, England, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Mexico,
Peru, Poland, Puerto Rico, Spain, United States and Venezuela. It has also
published plays by some of the most important contemporary Hispanic
playwrights. These collaborations make GESTOS a truly unique journal.
Issues are released in
April and November. Occasionally, monographic numbers are published.
Articles are published in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. They are all
included in LatAm-Studies Full Text.
