The journal Estudios atacameños, South-Andean Archeology and Anthropology publishes and distributes original and unpublished research on topics about archeology, social anthropology, ethnohistory and bio-antropology from the south-central Andes. It is the official journal of the Institute of Archaeological Research and Museum (IIAMA) of the Universidad Católica del Norte. Estudios atacameños was founded in 1973 by Jesuit priest Fr. Gustavo Le Paige s. j. considered as a sui generis priest-archaeologist. He collected various remnants of Andean cultures, which he then donated to the Universidad del Norte for the beginnings of the museum. The journal is funded by the Facility Relevant publications of the Universidad Católica del Norte. The issues 33 and 34 published in 2007 were financed by the Fund for Scientific Publications of CONICYT.

The Universidad Católica del Norte (UCN), located in San Pedro de Atacama in the Region of Antofagasta, Chile, was founded in 1956.  It is the eighth based in Chile and the third Catholic University in the country. The UCN is a socially responsible leading university member of the group of top universities of the National System of Higher Education. It is nationally and internationally respected.

While archeology has been the biggest development of all studies of the area and remains the subject about which more is written, Estudios atacameños aims to cover other matters relating thereto. They have an extensive archive of articles from national and foreign researchers. The journal is open to all kinds of scientific criticism on Atacameño issues. The journal, seeks to contribute to the planning of the development of Atacameño with respect to ethnic groups threatened by a silent cultural ethnocide. To be published, every work is evaluated by two external reviewers and members of the Editorial Committee composed of distinguished professionals and representatives of prominent academic universities, museums, foundations, research centers, institutes and colleges in South America, Mexico, United States, France and Scotland.
